The OPD sent out this notice today concerning speeding in school zones. It is good that such a strong emphasis is placed on this matter in our community, through efforts by the schools, OPD, and folks involved in programming such as the Safe Routes To Schools planning.
Here are the numbers:
SPEEDING IN SCHOOL OR SAFETY ZONES:
1-10MPH OVER LIMIT=$ 187.90 (FORFEITURE) AND 3 DEMERIT POINTS
11-15MPH OVER LIMIT=$200.50(FORFEITURE) AND 4 DEMERIT POINTS
2ND OR SUBSEQUENT VIOLATION W/in 1yr=$263.50 AND 4 DEMERIT POINTS
16-19MPH OVER LIMIT=$238.30(FORFEITURE) AND 4 DEMERIT POINTS
2ND OR SUBSEQUENT VIOLATION W/in 1yr=$288.70 AND 4 DEMERIT POINTS
20MPH OR MORE OVER THE LIMIT=$263.50 (FORFEITURE) AND 6 DEMERIT POINTS
2ND OR SUBSEQUENT VIOLATION W/in 1yr=$389.50 (FORFEITURE AND 6 DEMERIT POINTS
Of particular note is the "20MPH OR MORE OVER THE LIMIT". In a school zone, with kids around?!? That is beyond ridiculous if someone actually ever does that. I suspect the community would gladly raise that fine to $1000, with the second such violation raising to $2000 and a requirement to re-take drivers education class, as well as serve as an unpaid, supervised crossing guard for a school year.
