Don't Worry, I'm a Carnie

Posted by Justin Mitchell Wednesday, July 8, 2009

Carnie - of course referring to anyone associated with Sawdust Days. You know, those folks from out of town who have complete freedom to do whatever they want wherever they want within Menominee Park - freedoms that no owners of the park (Oshkosh residents) have.

You know, the folks who can freely have their pets wander around - pets that all Oshkosh residents are prohibited from having in the park.

And the folks who never seem to notice that there are driveways and parking spaces in the park, or people who have reserved shelters with the intention of actually utilizing the grounds adjacent to the shelter, or viewing the water through the small land area between the shelter and the lake.

Or the folks who continually believe that your family reunion that is taking place, following proper reservations and dues payment, is open to all, including wandering into the kitchen, sitting down with others at reserved tables, stealing electricity, stealing water, just loitering around outside of your party staring in for well over an hour, etc.

The carnies also are able to spend the night in the park - presumably for free (although I haven't actually looked into this and would hope that I'm wrong).
So, MainStreetOshkosh is in the process of printing official Carnie badges for free distribution to anyone in Oshkosh that wants to have free reign to the park - no more needing to follow hour restrictions. Drive wherever you want, camp out, steal electricity, bring your pets, use the shelters, whatever. And if anyone asks, just say you're a carnie and invite them into your new camp site.
And of course there are no carnie badges being printed, and this whole issue in this post is just the frustration of having only one weekend that works for the whole extended family, and the notion that Menominee Park in centralized Oshkosh is a beautiful setting for a family reunion - a park that my immediate family utilizes 4-5 days per week during the Spring through Fall, and a park that genuinely sucks when the carnies take over. Thankfully Sawdust Days is a big money maker for the city... that doesn't take a lot of staff time and resources... and is transparently coordinated with full collaboration of neighbors and concerned citizens...

  2. While I can appreciate your frustrations about some of the abuses of our park, I think there is some classicism in your comments. Sawdust Daze is misunderstood by it critics. There is no bigger celebration our community and who it really is than this FREE summertime festival that brings out everyone. Sure, normal park users may not enjoy funnel cake or corn dogs. Or may be turned off by shirtless man or pregnant teens, etc. But for the most part, for the moment the most diversified event in Oshkosh as far as race and as far as class goes, has people happy. Problems aside. Carnies are real people with real jobs and are assigned a position or lot in the park. They are just doing their job, providing entertainment for us, before moving on to the next community.

OK this post was funny, but this comment just made me laugh my ass off - thank you!

  6. Guys and Anon-
Any word from council or city on the "special events" policy?

  8. Of course not. They've had how many years and still dont have one and I bet they never will. They're too busy undoing things already done, micromanaging the staff and worrying about shit that doesn't need to be worried about. In the meantime things that should be looked at are ignored. The chief bottlewasher and his minions are nothing but losers.

  10. We hit Sawdust Days one night during it's duration each Summer, usually Thursday. We grab a bite in Little Mexico then take a stroll past the old time tents. We're in and out in one hour.

  12. Speaking to the Special Events policy, I asked CM Rohloff about it last week. He indicated that he reviewed the rough draft the first week of July, then directed staff to make some changes and expects it to come to the July 28 Common Council meeting for approval.

  18. Are such juvenile comments really necessary? What a sad statement about their author. It must be quite depressing having such a sorry lot in life that all you can do is poke fun of other people, especially when your physical characteristics are more than likely less than GQish.

  20. So, U posting again on the 20th Miz Thiel?

Sorry babe, but I'm sure you do have a special place in your tummy for those funnel cakes.

    Cheers Girly
