Monitor Elections in Oshkosh, Cutting the Board Question

Election monitors are needed for Oshkosh next Tuesday April 1 for the general election. If you are able to help any time between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m., please let me know. It's not difficult, we'll train you, and you learn a lot! Please email Ann at afrisch@voyager.net

The Oshkosh Chamber of Commerce posted candidate questions online here. The asked county board members what their stance was on cutting the board. To no surprise, many support the cut. Also to no surprise, their reasons are horrible.

Why don't those concerned with better elections volunteer to serve as poll workers?

I worked as a poll worker for two years but now I can't because of a conflict of interest.

I loved working as a poll worker, and I agree that it is a great way to work directly for fair elections. Observing elections and reporting irregularities is another great way to work for fair elections.

The last time I worked the polls I had an election observer complain to my polling place chair about my t-shirt and made me cover it up. It said: "DIEBOLD - we count, you don't." He claimed I was somehow promoting the voting equipment that we were using, the same equipment that I lobbied the County Board not to purchase due to its security flaws. It was kind of ironic, really.

working the polls is a fine avenue to observe the one site you work at, while prohibiting you from observing all of the other polls.

plus, as we've seen in other states in which significant electoral issues have arisen, good poll workers are often trumped by heavily partisan poll chairs.

I commend the efforts of those working to ensure a strong, honest, and fair election system. Unfortunately, not everyone views this as working to strengthen our democracy.
